Request for Proposals - Copyediting Handbook on Mega-Sporting Events and Human Rights

Overview

The Centre invites proposals to undertake copyediting of its Handbook on Mega-Sporting Events and Human Rights, to be published by Routledge. The text is in English (UK) and will be approximately 202,500 words. The timeline for publication requires final copyediting to be completed by 16 December 2022. 

Background

The Centre was established in 2018 and its mission is to advance a world of sport that fully respects and promotes human rights by generating awareness, building capacity and creating lasting value through the responsible delivery of day-to-day sport and sporting events around the world. 

The Centre is a UK registered charity (Company Number 11422595, Charity Number 1187647)) controlled by a Swiss association whose Members and Permanent Observers include the intergovernmental standard bearers for human rights – the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Office of the UN Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

Through the Association and its Advisory Council, the Centre brings together an unprecedented coalition of governments, intergovernmental organisations, sports bodies, civil society organisations, sponsors and broadcasters. Together we are working to achieve our mission through delivery of our strategy Convergence 2025.

The Centre’s work is rooted in normative international human rights standards. The values that guide how we serve and support our community and affected groups and work with our partners are to be trustworthy, legitimate, innovative, collaborative and enabling.

The Handbook on Mega-Sporting Events and Human Rights is an important project for the Centre in fulfilling our role to promote thought leadership in sport and human rights. This book will consolidate much of the groundbreaking work and collective learning in the field undertaken by Centre staff and other expert contributors since the establishment of the Mega-Sporting Events Platform for Human Rights in 2015 and continuing with the establishment and growth of the Centre. 

Proposed Scope of Work

The contractor will be responsible for the final editing of the Handbook on Mega-Sporting Events and Human Rights in order to prepare the text for final submission to the publisher, working in liaison with Centre staff and reporting to the Deputy CEO. 

The text will be in English (UK), include 45 chapters plus an index, bibliography and table of contents and total approximately 205,000 words. The draft chapters including the bibliography need to be prepared in accordance with the publisher’s style guide. We expect the work of the copy-editor to start from 17 October 2022 onwards. Individual chapters from the text can be made available ahead of 17 October 2022 as available, if desired to achieve the final deadline for submission.

Timeline

• RFP advertised by 26 August 2022.
• Deadline for submission of proposals: 23.59 CET 23 September 2022.
• Contract awarded and work to start by 17 October 2022.
• Submission of final manuscript by 16 December 2022.
